2.1 Introduction
By definition, acronyms are words formed from the initial letters of several other
words. Typically, these new words are used as abbreviations for the phrase. The
environmental field is one of the worst for using, and perhaps over-using acronyms. As
part of your role as an environmental manager, it is critical that you know what the
acronyms mean. Therefore, this chapter presents a list of the most common acronyms
used in the environmental field and throughout this manual. This list may not be
complete, but it is a good place to start. Another source of acronym definitions can be
